Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a herbaceous plant from the Lamiaceae family, originally from Mexico and Guatemala, where it has been cultivated since pre-Hispanic times. Chia seed oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds of this plant, which allows the preservation of its nutritional and therapeutic properties.

This oil is rich in essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6, as well as antioxidant vitamins, minerals and beneficial phytochemicals for health. Its properties include anti-inflammatory action, healing, moisturising and regenerating the skin.

Chia seed oil is used in the cosmetic industry to make creams, lotions, soaps and shampoos, as it helps to maintain healthy, soft and young-looking skin, as well as to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, spots and stretch marks. It is also used in cooking as a nutritional supplement and in the production of healthy food products such as bread, biscuits, smoothies and salads.

To obtain chia seed oil, mature seeds are selected and cleaned before being subjected to cold pressing extraction. The result is a light golden oil with a mild flavour that is stored in dark containers to preserve its quality.

The botanical name of chia is Salvia hispanica, while its INCI is Salvia Hispanica Seed Oil, its CAS number is 93384-40-2 and its main components are linoleic acid, oleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. It also contains antioxidants such as tocopherols and phenols, as well as minerals such as calcium, magnesium and iron.
