Geranium essential oil is obtained from the leaves and stems of the plant Pelargonium graveolens, also known as rose geranium. This plant is native to South Africa, although it is currently cultivated in many parts of the world for its highly valued essential oil.

Geranium essential oil is characterized by having a sweet and fresh floral aroma with herbal and citrus notes. Among its main properties are its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic and astringent action. It has also been traditionally used to relieve stress, anxiety and depression.

Geranium essential oil is used in the cosmetic industry as an ingredient in skin, hair and nail care products due to its moisturizing, toning and healing properties. It is also used in perfumery as an ingredient in floral fragrances, and in the food industry as a flavoring in products such as candy, beverages, and baked foods.

There are different methods to obtain geranium essential oil, the most common being steam distillation and solvent extraction. In steam distillation, the leaves and stems of the plant are subjected to steam to release the essential oil, which is subsequently separated from the water through a decantation process. In solvent extraction, the plant is immersed in an organic solvent to dissolve the essential oil, which is then separated from the solvent by evaporation. Steam distillation is the preferred method as no chemicals are used and is considered safer and more natural.
